Parliament House Protest for Secular Education

Qld Humanists:

Maria Proctor of the Qld Humanists has advised us of a protest to be held a Parliament House, Brisbane on Tuesday, 13 April at 8.30am.

I know it’s a difficult day and time, but if any of you would like to join me there, it would be great to see you.  I think this is an important cause and it would be good to give it our support.

Get Secular Back in the Act – Protest

Start Date/Time: Tuesday, April 13, 2010 8:30 AM

End Date/Time: Tuesday, April 13, 2010 10:30 PM

WE WANT INCLUSIVE SCHOOL COMMUNITIES!

WE WANT A PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT IS FREE, SECULAR AND WELCOME

TO ALL!

Protest against 100 years of religious privilege in Queensland!

When introduced in 1875, the Queensland Education Act guaranteed a free and secular education for every child. A controversial referendum in 1910 allowed ministers of religion to conduct religious instruction and bible lessons. Every incidence of the word secular was removed from the Act. During the succeeding 100 years this amendment has resulted in religion (particularly Christianity) being given a privleged position within our education system. We want to see an education system that respects the right of children to freedom of religion and belief.

Join us at the gates of Parliament House from 8:30 am!

Speakers at the protest will include Dr Max Wallace and HSQ President, Maria Proctor.

For further details phone/ text Maria on: 0438 630 450

Wear the freethought and secular colours of yellow and purple to show your support!
